“I hear wedding bells!” Mabel announced as she entered the living room where Miller and I were sat.

“What?” I gasped, wondering who she was talking about.

“I was just at the dentist and Dr. Barrow said that Brielle’s boyfriend is going to propose today and that the rumor is he is planning a summer wedding, but guys, it’s basically summer now!” she continued.

Dr. Barrow and my familiar, Fitz, were one and the same. I felt as though I had made that clear to Mabel several times but I got the impression she wasn’t getting it. My familiar was a shifter, he could change his form into just about anything but generally flipped between human and cat.

Brielle was Effie and Kate’s cousin and this proposal had been ‘just about to happen’ for weeks now. At first it was kind of exciting, but people were growing impatient. This was an indicator of just how many people in Hallow Haven needed to get some hobbies as they were now putting all their energy into hounding Brielle’s boyfriend into speeding up his plans.

“Is there a chance that he could mean next summer, people don’t tend to get married with just a few weeks notice,” I replied.

“They do around here,” Miller said. “There aren’t ever that many engaged couples at any one time, so you never have to wait eighteen months for a venue or anything.”

“Good to know,” I said. “Why exactly does Dr. Barrow think he has the inside scoop on this proposal?”

“I think he has been talking to Patrick, Brielle’s boyfriend,” Mabel said.

“I know who Patrick is,” I countered. I think I’d met him once or twice in the café, but I doubted I could pick him out of a line up. Brielle was usually busy with her work as the island doctor, so she rarely made an appearance to any social events Kate or Effie would host at their place. I didn’t even know what he did for work, I think Kate had said it was something boring and never elaborated.

“Well anyway, Patrick apparently wants to wait until Brielle has a whole day off work to take her out to a beach picnic or something, but he’s been seen around town this morning buying champagne!” Mabel squealed.

“That’s your evidence that it’s happening today?” I said. “Look, as much fun as this is…” I had spread the missing person’s reports across the coffee table and Mabel glanced down, obviously recognizing the paperwork.

“Are they all still missing?” she gasped.

“Yeah, unless you’ve seen them somewhere,” Miller replied. “We are planning to look into Melissa first, she has theoretically been missing the longest and I know that the first twenty-four hours are usually the most important but if these disappearances are connected then getting more information from Melissa’s husband might actually help us find the others.”

Mabel sat down on the sofa beside Miller and scooted right up to him to read the notes. She was sat at an angle that meant her knee was brushing up against his.
